Practice and Produce Excellence- Newsletter

Jim Thome played major league baseball for 22 years for six teams. He hit 612 home runs during his professional career and was inducted into the Hall of Fame this past Sunday. More important to me, “Jimmy” was my childhood friend in Central Illinois where we umpired Little League together and turned plenty of double plays.

When I lived outside DC and Baltimore after grad school, he used to invite me to Camden Yards for games and to meet the players. I watched him take batting practice again and again and again. Much like in this touching article, I’ve always told people that Jimmy simply earned it – he outworked any other ball player I ever saw, in person or on TV.

A few months after I first moved to Orlando, he called because he’d heard through the “back home” grapevine that I was living near Tampa. He said we’d have to catch up sometime when he was in town to play the Rays. He called that night from his cell during a rain-delay at Yankee stadium.

There’s a reason every city Jimmy played for still adores him. He really is a genuinely nice guy. Congrats Jimmy! You’ve been an inspiring example of what continuous practice produces in any profession: excellence.
